Compress and stretch are the two directions of force. stretch
To stretch is to pull a thing out to greater length or size under tension — a band, a muscle, a budget — with the strong implication that it wants to come back: what is stretched holds its new length only while the force lasts. Old English streccan gave the word, and its elasticity made it endlessly figurative: money stretches, patience stretches, a claim can be a stretch. As a noun it is a continuous run of something — a stretch of road, coast, or years.

Compress hides a heteronym: the verb is com-PRESS, but the noun — a cold COM-press held to an injury — moves the stress forward; recognise it in reading. Stretch's traps are idiomatic: 'a bit of a stretch' means implausible, 'at a stretch' means just barely, 'stretch the truth' means exaggerate — in listening, 'that's a stretch' signals doubt. In maths, both name graph transformations: curves are stretched or compressed along an axis.
TOEFL science runs on the physics: gases compress, springs compress and stretch, and materials fail under compression or tension — state the direction of force and the passage opens up. Maths students meet the pair as graph transformations (a vertical stretch, a horizontal compression).
