Constrict and dilate are the body's opposite orders for any opening. To constrict is to squeeze from all sides so the channel narrows: vessels constrict in the cold, pupils constrict in bright light. To dilate is to widen the opening so more can pass: vessels dilate with heat, pupils dilate in the dark. Same pupil, same vessel — the grip tightens or the aperture opens.
This is the antonym pair medicine runs on. Both words are Latin — constringere, 'to bind tight', dilatare, 'to spread wide' — and physiology deploys them as a matched set: vasoconstriction and vasodilation are how the body steers blood, and the pupil's whole job is the swing between them. To constrict is to squeeze from every side at once — an encircling pressure that makes the space inside smaller. Where narrow only reports the loss of width, constrict names the grip that causes it — and figuratively the grip can be rules, fear or debt constricting a life.

To dilate is to widen — most often an opening: pupils dilate in the dark, blood vessels dilate with heat, a valve dilates to let more through. From Latin dīlātāre, 'to spread wide' (latus, 'wide', also behind latitude), it is a formal, faintly clinical word. It has a second, literary life too: to dilate on a subject is to speak or write about it at length, spreading your words wide. It works both ways — drops dilate the pupil, and the pupil dilates. Its opposite is to constrict.

Dilate is the iris drawing open: the blades pull back and the aperture grows from the middle out — nothing squeezes, the opening simply widens.
