Broaden and expand both mean to grow, but along different measures. To broaden is to take in more variety — more kinds, more range, a wider spread of what is included: you broaden your horizons, your appeal, a debate. To expand is to grow in magnitude — more size, number, or scope overall: a company expands, a balloon expands, the universe expands. Broaden adds kinds; expand adds amount.
Both are increase words, and they overlap in the abstract middle — you can broaden or expand your knowledge — but each leans a different way. Broaden comes from broad, width in the sense of range: what broadens takes in more sorts of thing, so a broadened curriculum covers more subjects, not simply more hours. Expand comes from Latin expandere, 'to spread out': what expands occupies more, whether that is floor space, headcount, market, or scope. The quick test is what got bigger — the variety inside, or the magnitude overall.
broaden
To broaden is to make or become broader — wider, but especially wider in range and variety. A river broadens; more often, you broaden your horizons, your knowledge, your appeal, your mind. Built from broad, it leans toward the abstract where its cousin widen leans toward physical width and gaps. To broaden a debate is to let more voices and angles into it, not just to make it bigger. It works both ways — reading broadens the mind, and the estuary broadens. Its opposite is to narrow or to restrict.
expand
To expand is to spread out — to grow larger in size, number, or reach. Heated gas expands, a company expands into new markets, and a writer is asked to expand on a point by adding detail. The Latin expandere means 'to spread out', and the word keeps that outward motion: the edges move away while the centre stays put. It is the natural opposite of shrink and contract. In its 'expand on' form the sense shifts slightly, from growing bigger to explaining more fully.

The widening beam and the heated plate. Broaden opens a narrow spot into a wide wash — the same light now falling across more kinds of thing. Expand pushes a plate bigger on every side — more of the same thing, no new kinds admitted. When you cannot decide, ask what actually increased. If it is the range of what is covered, broaden; if it is the sheer size, number, or scope, expand. You broaden a debate by admitting new topics; you expand it by giving it more hours.

The pair keep separate second lives that never overlap. Expand alone means 'add detail' — expand on an argument, expand a note into a paragraph — a sense broaden simply does not have. Broaden, meanwhile, owns the register of inclusion: a broad church, a broad coalition, broad support all claim range across kinds, where expanded support would just mean more of it. The two suit different set-pieces, and matching them earns lexical-resource marks. Broaden carries the range collocations essays lean on — broaden your horizons, broaden the appeal, broaden the debate — while expand carries scale and, crucially, 'expand on', the phrase for developing a point further. In IELTS Task 1, growth in a figure expands (or rises); reserve broaden for describing a widening spread of categories. Swapping them ('expand your horizons' aside, which is idiomatic) usually reads as a range word used for a size job.
